The basis of Subud is a spiritual experience called the "latihan kejiwaan." "Latihan" is an Indonesian word for training or exercise and "kejiwaan" means spiritual or of the soul. (The Indonesian words are used when talking about Subud to avoid misleading connotations in English or other languages.) The latihan is experienced as a physical and inner reality which does not arise from one's thinking or efforts. It happens spontaneously and its manifestation is different for each person. The latihan lasts about half an hour and is practiced two or three times a week, women and men separately. During the latihan one is always conscious and can stop the experience at any time.
